This portolan chart of Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa comes from the “Atles Català,” a collection of six parchments attributed to the Majorcan Cresques Abraham and presented to the young Charles VI, newly crowned King of France, in 1380. It combines the finest geographical (coastal charts, scales) and nautical (compass rose, rhumb lines) knowledge and, in lesser-known territories, indulges in a whimsical and eclectic style.
