Burmese Map of the World – Relief

This astonishing map, taken from The Thirty-Seven Nats (a work published by Sir Richard Carnac Temple in 1906) and believed to have been produced in the 17th century, depicts an ovoid continent where it is impossible to recognize the geography of the Burmese kingdom and its neighbors. It blends religious figures, real places (such as the capital, Ava, or the Irrawaddy River, Burma’s main river, 2,170 km long), and symbols difficult to interpret (a giant tree with red flowers, a lotus flower, teardrop-shaped islands), recreating a territory marked by religion, particularly the cult of the great Nats, spirits whose worship predated the introduction of Buddhism to Burma.
